Student Spotlights

I chose this program because of its focus on financial derivatives. Not only was I able to gain a thorough understanding of how derivates are priced, developed and used, I was able to advance my career as a direct result of my coursework in the program. My goal was to find a job in investment banking when I graduated, but midway through the program I was offered a fantastic opportunity in risk management. I still use the knowledge I gained at UNC Charlotte in my current position at Bank of America.

I chose UNC Charlotte because of the faculty's practical experience and commitment to student success. My degree in Mathematical Finance gives me a specialized advantage in areas ranging from risk management to derivative pricing to trading. My plan is to sit for the CFA exams so I can pursue my current goal of becoming a portfolio manager. The program has more than prepared me for this challenge, and for success throughout my career.

Marcel Burks Morgantown, WV
BS in Finance, West Virginia University
Previous Position: Information Research Specialist Bank of America
Current Position: Investment Systems Analyst, Evergreen Investments

I came to UNC Charlotte straight from my undergraduate program. One of the huge benefits of the MS in Mathematical Finance program has been its connectivity to Charlotte. The city is a prominent global financial center with a lot of opportunity. Because of these connections, I was able do an internship at Wachovia and gain valuable insight into the financial industry. The internship, coupled with UNC Charlotte's strong reputation, were instrumental in helping me secure a position after graduation.
