What degree are you pursuing and why?

I’m pursuing the Master of Science in Mathematical Finance degree. I have always loved mathematics, but once I began to build my career in business, I wanted an opportunity to bridge those two worlds. This program combines my passion for numbers with real-world financial analysis skills I can utilize at my job.

Why did you choose the Belk College of Business over others?

The Belk College of Business and specifically the Mathematical Finance program was everything I was looking for in a graduate program: a valuable master’s degree, engaging professors, networking opportunities, a flexible schedule and an affordable price – all in the center of one of the most beautiful, fastest-growing financial cities in the country.

Tell us about your job. What lessons have you learned in your courses that you were able to apply on the job?

I currently work in supply chain–performing analytics and creating process improvements. Not only can I directly apply hard skills like data modeling and analysis, I am also directly able to apply soft skills like problem-solving, critical thinking, etc.

What activities are you involved in when not working/studying?

I love outside activities like backpacking and camping. I also love to explore all of the new restaurants and thing to do in Charlotte!

What has been the best part of your academic experience so far?

The relationships I’ve developed with my professors, classmates, UNC Charlotte staff, and employees of various companies I’ve met at networking events have been the best part of my Belk College experience so far. I’m also enjoying the challenge of the rigorous curriculum.

How would you describe the Belk College of Business to someone considering a master’s program?

Challenging – be prepared to be pushed. The expectations are high and the coursework can be demanding, but it’s worth it. I would also stress the importance of taking advantage of as many Belk College career development, networking and extra training opportunities as possible. This program is about more than just earning a degree, it’s about finding and developing your professional self. It’s important to get involved in order to seize those opportunities.
